Gaslighter
The Chicks, are the best-selling all-female band in country music history. Gaslighter, their fifth studio album and first release in 15 years, debuted at number three in July 2020.
Pentagram was brought in to design the album packaging on a fast and tight deadline. I led the creative and art direction, working closely with the band at every step — exploring multiple cover directions and image selections before lead singer Natalie Maines discovered the cover image, a group of Irish dancers that she and bandmates Emily Robison and Martie Maguire felt captured the spirit of the album. That image, combined with bold repetitive typography and neon colors, became the creative anchor for not only the packaging but the band’s album release performances and music video graphics.
The band changed their name shortly after the first pressing was complete. This limited version is what’s photographed and represented here.
And yes, The Chicks have been my favorite band since I was a little girl. Getting the call to work on this album was one of the biggest pinch-me moments of my career.
