Gaslighter

The Chicks, top selling all-female band and biggest selling country group in the US, released their fifth studio album, Gaslighter, in July 2020. Produced by Jack Antonoff and The Chicks, this was the band’s first studio release in 15 years. Gaslighter debuted at number 3 and was also the best-selling album on its debut week.

Pentagram was hired to design the album packaging with a very fast and tight deadline. Because of this, we worked closely with the band each step of the way, studying multiple cover designs and image selections. Lead singer Natalie Maines discovered the cover image, a group of Irish dancers, that she and fellow band members, Emily Robison and Martie Maguire, felt evoked the spirit of the album and the band. This image and the bold use of repetitive typography and neon colors became the catalyst for not only the album packaging but the band’s album release performances and music video graphics.

The band changed their name shortly after the first pressing of the album was complete. This limited version was designed by Pentagram and is photographed and represented here.

Perhaps the best part of this project is that The Chicks have been my favorite band since I was a little girl. Getting the call to work on this album was one of the biggest “pinch me” moments in my career so far!
